Breast augmentation or the ‘boob job’ is a surgical procedure to enlarge breast size. For some women, smaller or sagging breasts make them feel that they have a disproportionate figure. Of course, everybody has different goals in mind for their breast augmentation surgeries. Whatever the goal is, breast augmentation is definitely one of the most popular plastic and cosmetic surgery in the world. But, what are the benefits and risks of breast augmentation? It is very important that you are well-informed about both so you can have the right expectations and be on the lookout for any problems. Here are 5 benefits and 5 risks of breast augmentation surgery you need to keep in mind.

    Before and After

    Breast augmentation benefits

    1. Enhance your confidence and self-esteem

One of the most obvious benefits of breast augmentation is the huge confidence and self-esteem boost. After all, your confidence dictates how you act and what you do in certain situations. Not only your appearance, but the positive results of breast augmentation may also extend to numerous other areas of your life. Feeling good about yourself can significantly help you achieve your personal goals.

    1. Make you look more feminine

Although it is difficult to put our finger on what makes a woman feminine, for some women, having a womanly figure is a part of it. It is up to yourself to decide what makes you feel more feminine. If having a curvier female figure is your idea of “feminine,” then breast augmentation can help you achieve that.

    1. Improve your social opportunities

Appearance and image do matter. Of course, in the end, it is up to our personality, but the first impression matters. Breast augmentation can improve your social and professional opportunities, particularly if your job is image-based like the media, public relations, and communications. Of course, this is not to say that you should not love yourself if you don’t meet a certain beauty standard. Everyone’s beautiful in their own ways, but if you feel like you will have more social opportunities after a breast augmentation, then the procedure may be your solution.

    1. Allow you to wear different clothes that actually fit

If finding clothes that can actually fit your body and looks flattering is a problem for you, then breast augmentation can help you with the problem. A breast augmentation can make clothes looks good and fit better on you. Also, if you ever felt stressed out with going to a beach or a public swimming pool because of the way your breast looks, a breast augmentation can alleviate that.

    1. Improve your libido and sexual satisfaction

A study reveals that women experience increased sex drive and improved sexual life following a breast augmentation. This is mostly linked to increased confidence and self-image.

    Before and After

    Breast augmentation risks

    1. It may sound simple, but it is a serious surgery

Breast augmentation is a very common procedure, but no one should take it lightly. If you are going to undergo the procedure, there are several restrictions you will need to follow. If you are a smoker, you need to stop smoking at least three to six weeks before and after the surgery. You may also need to avoid alcohol and some anticoagulant medicine, such as aspirin. These restrictions are made to prevent complications.

    1. The recovery period is important

Following your surgeon’s advice and post-operative instructions is an absolute must. The recovery period determines how well you will heal as well as the results you will receive. Your surgeon may ask you to rest as much as possible in the first week. Within 2 to 3 weeks, you will be asked to engage in light to mild exercise. Wear a good supportive bra when exercising during your recovery period to keep your implants in place.

    1. Breast implants can leak

Both silicone and saline breast implants can leak or ‘rupture.’ This means that there’s a hole or tear in the outer shell of the implant. With a saline breast implant, a hole will deflate the shell and the saline solution leaks. When this occurs in a silicone implant, the gel can remain in the shell or in the scar tissue that forms around the implant. If a rupture happens, your surgeon needs to remove it to avoid further complications. Your surgeon may be able to replace the implant with a new one, but sometimes the ruptured implants will only be removed without replacement.

    1. You need to pay more attention to your health and have periodic MRI scans

Since breast implants can rupture, you need to take MRI scans periodically to make sure that the implants are intact. Ruptured breast implants could lead to serious complications. Also, silicone implants can make it harder for oncologists to detect certain types of cancer. This is why MRI scans are essential after a breast augmentation. Getting MRI scans periodically can help find early signs of implant rupture.

    1. You may experience capsular contraction

Capsular contraction is a condition in which the scar tissue around your implants hardens up and began to contract. This affects the softness and contour of your breast. It is important to be aware of this problem as it can result in aesthetic problems and pain. However, with advancements in implant manufacturing and techniques, breast augmentation has improved significantly and the risk of capsule formation is now very low.

All of these risks can be avoided if you choose a qualified and certified plastic surgeon to perform your breast augmentation. Therefore, it is very important to do your homework and learn about the experience, skills, as well as credentials of your plastic surgeon.
