This industry has enormous economic value—billions of dollars per year. Prominent healthcare facilities like Bangkok Hospital and Bumrungrad International Hospital, which draw patients from all over the world, are important participants in this market.

Fact 2: Medical Tourism for Plastic Surgery

In particular, for plastic surgery, medical tourism has been a significant contributor to the growth of THailand’s healthcare sector. With that, patients from all over the world, especially from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia China, and now more so often from the Middle East, go to Thailand to undergo their surgical procedures.

Minimally invasive treatments such as Botox and fillers all the way to more complex procedures such as facelifts, liposuction, and breast augmentation are some of the examples of procedures that people travel to Thailand for. With these diverse offers and their affordability alongside the high-quality service and the thought of recovering on the beaches and convenience of Thailand, there is no doubt that the reason that people travel to Thailand for their medical journey.

Fact 3: The Variety of Plastic Surgery Options in Thailand

Thailand’s variety of plastic surgery options is unmatched by most other nations in which the quantity and the convenience of access adds to their appeal. With beauty in Thailand being a top priority, there are procedures for those who wish to enhance their body shape, reverse the signs of ageing, and enhance their facial features.

In addition to common procedures like rhinoplasty (nose job), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and breast augmentation, Thailand is famous for its sex reassignment surgeries. With greater tolerance for the LGBTQ+ in Thailand, there are even clinics specifically focused on ailments and procedures that take their special conditions into mind. This demonstrates Thailand’s ability to adapt and cater to a wide diversity of cosmetic needs.

Fact 4: The Level of Professionalism and Safety in Thailand’s Plastic Surgery

The diversity of options, the medical tourism industry, and the scale of the plastic surgery industry in Thailand all give it an edge in the medical industry. However, the tipping factor for Thailand will be the professionalism given by the medical experts and surgeons who are often highly trained and boast international qualifications and memberships in prestigious organizations such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

At the same time, Thailand boasts some of the most innovative hospitals, like Bumrungrand for example, that push the boundary of medical technology and professionalism internationally. These hospitals are also accredited by international bodies such as the Joint Commission International (JCI) which is a testament to their adherence to the care and safety of the patients.

The combination of these factors is the deciding factor for swaying the medical tourist’s choice to go to Thailand for their plastic surgery procedures.

Fact 5: The Cultural Acceptance and Popularity

A major factor that helps the plastic surgery scene thrive in THailand is the cultural attitudes that Thais have towards this procedure. Generally, in most corners of the world, plastic surgery is looked upon with some form of contempt and people believe that it is not natural to have these procedures done. Although it is true that it can be done with exaggeration, there are occasions and applications where it can help improve someone’s life.

Thais understand this and celebrate this with beauty pageants, most notably transgender beauty contests, where surgical enhancements are practically the norm. With this insight,  medical tourists can feel the freedom they have for their decisions in a society that embraces these values to accept physical enhancements and alterations.

The plastic surgery phenomenon in Thailand is driven by the amalgamation of factors that include Thailand’s medical tourism industry and a wide variety of procedures available for patients to choose from. Furthermore, Thailand prides itself on having medical professionals and clinics that maintain a high standard of quality and care for the patients and the culture surrounding plastic surgery in Thailand that embraces it instead of being heavily antagonistic.

While these factors provide a good insight into the world of plastic surgery in Thailand, it is important to remember that this is a sector that will continue to grow over time. That is because of the increasing influx of medical tourists from abroad who see Thailand’s benefits and the increasing acceptance amongst the locals to use these services as well.

To adapt to the increasing demand, Thailand has evolved and continues to adapt itself to the clientele who have high expectations for the medical industry in Thailand. This undoubtedly will continue to remain at the forefront as one of the biggest countries in the world of medicine with its high-quality, safe, and affordable procedures.
