Top 5 Questions about Rhinoplasty (Nose job)

Q: Am I suitable for rhinoplasty?

    You are if you have:

    • Too big/small nose
    • Bumpy nose
    • Too wide/narrow nostrils
    • Crooked nose
    • A deviated septum (a condition in which there is difficulty breathing due to a crooked inner structure of the nose)

Q: What types of rhinoplasty are there?

    • Reduction rhinoplasty: a procedure where the nose will be reshaped to be more proportionate to other facial features (more common)
    • Augmentation rhinoplasty: the bridge or nasal tip of the nose is built up with bone/tissue grafting (more common)
    • Post-traumatic rhinoplasty: if the patient has injured the nose, the nose will be straightened and the nasal septum corrected (the inner structure in the nasal cavity)
    • Reconstructive rhinoplasty: if part of the nose is lost due to an accident, skin cancer, or illness, the nose will be rebuilt using skin grafts
    • Ethnic rhinoplasty: commonly for people of African American, Asian, Hispanic, Afro-Caribbean, and Middle Eastern descent as they have softer nasal contours and need more care in preserving that feature of the nose

Patients can undergo the “open” or “closed” procedure but usually, the “closed” procedure is preferred as incisions are made inside the nose and thus there is no visible scarring.

    Patients are able to:

    • Narrow their nose bridge
    • Widen/narrow their nostrils
    • Straighten their crooked noses
    • Reshape the tip of their nose
    • Alter the angle between their noses and upper lips

Q: What are the risks and complications?

    Temporary side effects:

    • Bruising (around the eyes)
    • Soreness and irritation
    • Nauseous
    • Swelling
    • Sinusitis
    • Nosebleeds

Risks and complications are rare, such as:

    • Infection
    • Unfavourable scarring
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Numbness
    • Chronic nosebleeds
    • Asymmetry
    • Hematoma (blood collecting under the skin)
    • Burst blood vessels
    • Possibility of undergoing the surgery again

Q: How long is the recovery period?

Around six weeks for the bone to heal completely, and the swelling will go down after 3 months but it takes around a year for it to fully dissipate and for the nose to heal completely

Q: How much is it going to cost?

    Depends on:

    • Experience of surgeon
    • Facilities
    • Location
