Pediatric neurosurgery is a subspecialty of neurosurgery that includes all surgical procedures related to a child’s brain, nervous system, and spinal cord. This subspecialty treats children that have operable neurological disorders, including head deformities, birth injuries (weakness of legs and arms), gait abnormalities (spasticity), as well as problems and injuries to the nerves, brain, or spine.

    What Does the Procedure Involve?

Pediatric neurosurgery involves tests that are designed to make children relaxed and cooperative. The tests may include neurological exams, imaging tests, biopsy, and precision medicine diagnosis. There are numerous different treatments within pediatric neurosurgery for various different neurological disorders, including but are not limited to neuroendoscopy, neurolysis, neurotization, endoscopic endonasal surgery, craniotomy. Most therapeutic and diagnostic procedures in pediatric neurosurgery are performed under general anesthetic.

How Long Should You Stay at your Destination?

The length of stay in the country depends on the procedure your child underwent. Children generally need to stay in the hospital for several days or weeks following their surgery. Since the initial recovery time may need the assistance of a team of specialized doctors and nurses, you and your child may need to stay in the area for up to 14 days.

How Long is the Recovery Time?

The total recovery time can be different for each child, depending on the child’s general health, the type of neurological disorder, and any complications. Your child may progressively regain their energy and return to their normal activity level in approximately six to eight weeks, but for some disorders, recovery can take years. It is best to talk to the pediatric neurosurgeon regarding your child’s recovery timeline, including the time they can go back to school and perform their daily activities.

    What Aftercare Should You Consider?

Your child may need to attend follow-up appointments for optimal healing, either with the pediatric neurosurgeon or in your home country. Physical therapy is an essential part of your child’s recovery to strengthen muscles and maintain flexibility as your child heals. Your child medical team will provide you with instructions regarding aftercare and how to care for your child at home.

What is the Success Rate for Pediatric Neurosurgery?

In general, the success rate depends on the specific condition and procedure. In general, pediatric neurosurgery is highly successful in helping children with neurological disorders, especially when pediatric neurosurgeon is highly-qualified and experienced. Since neurosurgery is a serious surgical procedure, there are some side effects and risks to be aware of, including infection, bleeding, the need for oxygen supplementation or nutritional support, damage to nearby organs and nerves, as well as allergic reactions to anesthetic.

Are there Alternatives to a Pediatric Neurosurgery Procedure?

Children with neurological disorders need to be treated by a pediatric neurosurgeon. However, if your child is too frail to undergo surgery or they cannot take any medication, talk to their doctor about the best alternative for their specific case.

What Should You Expect Before and After the Procedure?

Disorders of the spine, brain, and nerve can be life-threatening, dangerous, cause painful symptoms, and interfere with your child’s ability to grow normally. After your child is treated by a pediatric neurosurgeon, they may be cured of their disease and any symptoms should be relieved.
