Pancarditis, also known as perimyoendocarditis, is a medical condition in which the entire heart (the pericardium, myocardium, and endocardium) is inflamed. Treatment for pancarditis depends on the cause as well as the severity. Since pancarditis is a serious condition, your doctor may give you high doses of antibiotics or surgical intervention.

    What Does the Procedure Involve?

Your doctor may recommend high doses of intravenous (IV) antibiotics in the hospital for several weeks to clear up the infection. If the inflammation damages the heart valves, your doctor may perform surgery to repair or replace the damaged valve, treat persistent infections, remove excess fluid from the pericardial cavity, or remove the entire pericardium that has become rigid. Surgical intervention for pancarditis is performed under general anesthetic.

How Long Should You Stay in the Country?

You may need to stay in the hospital for 7 days for pancarditis treatment. After you are discharged from the hospital, plan to stay in the area for about 10 to 14 additional days. During your stay, your doctor will monitor your condition and see if the treatment is working against your inflammation.

How Long is the Recovery Time?

The recovery time after pancarditis treatment may take several weeks or months. During the first few weeks, usually around 8 weeks, you should avoid strenuous activity. Your doctor will give you a detailed recovery timeline.

    What Aftercare Should You Consider?

You will be given detailed aftercare instructions that you need to follow to avoid any complications. You may need to attend regular checkups to make sure your treatment is working, but you have the checkups with your local doctor.

What is the Success Rate for Pancarditis Treatment?

Pancarditis treatment is generally safe and effective. However, make sure you talk to your doctor about the side effects and risks of the treatment, which are diarrhea, itching or joint pain, shortness of breath, swelling in the legs, swelling in the ankles, swelling in the feet, infection, bleeding, blood clot, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and allergic reaction to the anesthetic.

Are there Alternatives to Pancarditis Treatment?

There is no alternative to treat pancarditis. Since the disease can be dangerous and life-threatening, your doctor may recommend you to undergo this treatment.

What Should You Expect Before and After the Procedure?

Before pancarditis treatment, your entire heart is inflamed, causing painful symptoms and preventing you from performing your daily activities. After treatment, the inflammation should be relieved, allowing you to go back to your normal routine and to enjoy a high quality of life.
