Knowing more about a Double Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty also known as double eyelid surgery is the most common cosmetic eyelid surgery.  It helps create double eyelids and corrects the baggy or sagging tissues around the eyes through the removal of excess skin, fat and muscle from the eyelids.

There are two methods:

  1. Stitching (non incisional)
  • 4 small holes are made and stitched up
  • Scarless
  • Recovery varies from 2-10 days, there might be swelling but hardly any bruising
  1. Cutting (incisional)
  • A incision is made and excess skin/fat is removed or tightening of the eyelid muscle
  • Longer recovery time – swelling and bruising will go down after around 2 weeks

Note: Most people prefer the stitching method as compared to the cutting method due to a shorter downtime; they do not have to take too much time off work or out of their daily lives.

After the surgery, it is best to apply a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Keeping the head above the chest level is also recommended. Avoid strenuous exercise or lifting heavy objects.

Risks and complications are rare such as:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Dry eyes
  • Abnormal coloring of the eyelids
  • Abnormal folding of the skin around the eyelid
  • Unable to fully close the eye
  • A pulled-down lower lid lash line
  • A possible loss of vision
